Systems Engineer

IT is responsible for all the technical issues and matters prior, during, and after the SMASH! convention. Our responsibilities range from managing the internal background and software of the SMASH! website, to on-the-day technical exercises and duties. SMASH! has a number of systems that help make the convention the great success that it is, many of which have been developed in-house. The IT infrastructure that we manage is the backbone of the convention, as all departments rely on the systems running smoothly and without delay or fault.

The IT department has a flat management structure with all members reporting directly to the IT Director and advising them of the best possible solutions to meet requirements and achieve goals. The team also employs a principle of “You can ask anyone anything anytime”, meaning no-one can stop you from asking hard and important questions and suggesting new ideas. SMASH IT is a collaborative environment where all team members are part of developing projects and direction within the department.

Ongoing (BAU and Projects):

  • Manage the Cloud platform, containerised applications, and virtual compute infrastructure
  • Manage computer networks (Cloud networking + convention / event site networking)
  • Manage convention hardware (Computers, peripherals, network devices)
  • Develop technology solutions to cater for diverse business requirements
  • Procure hardware, software, and technology services
  • Provide application and infrastructure support

During the convention:

  • Deploy network infrastructure and computers across the convention site
  • Monitor system and network performance
  • Provide technical support and respond to faults and incidents
  • Assist other IT staff as required

Requirements

To be successful in this role, you must:

  • Have proficiency in written English, with a clear and friendly communication style
  • Be available to set up and support technologies at the SMASH! convention (Set-up day + Convention weekend)
  • Be able to collaborate effectively with team members and business units to deliver the best solutions
  • Manage tasks and priorities effectively
  • Have a good understanding of when to say “NO”.
  • Have experience in technologies listed in the section below.(It is not required to have experience in all of the specific aspects listed below - some relevant experience, and commitment to learning and development, will also be highly regarded.)
