But what is Japanese alternative fashion?

Japanese alternative fashion is defined by subcultures and curated looks that are undoubtedly visually different from mainstream clothing in Japan. Alternative fashion is all about dressing the way you love and expressing yourself despite societal expectations! This can be seen in kawaii styles such as Lolita, Decora Kei, and Fairy Kei, which originated from the rebellion against Japan's rigid conformity culture by focusing on cuteness and whimsy. Other styles, such as Mori Kei and Cult Party Kei, involve dressing in vintage clothing to achieve a look very different from usual modern Japanese fashion.

Whilst many of these subcultures originated from Harajuku, Shibuya, and Shinjuku are also quite prominent alternative fashion hubs, as they are the origins of Gyaru and Jirai Kei, respectively. Both styles are known for their defiance against female beauty standards and expectations for women.

Other subcultures, such as Visual Kei, are more defined by the fashion and makeup styles of Visual Kei bands rather than being a purely fashion-based subculture.

A big part of all alternative subcultures is fostering local communities to enjoy the fashion and subculture with! Thus, SMASH! has partnered up with the UTS Alternative Fashion Society to bring you a J-fashion area that caters to various J-fashion styles!
