The SMASH! 2020 Online Art Competition was camping themed.

Our SMASH! Mascots Skadi and Cyrus went camping! Where did they go? Have they been isekai’d into a monster-filled forest, trying to make their way back to civilisation? Or are they just under a tent made from sheets in their living room, dreaming of a starlit sky? We accepted illustrated entries of all mediums!

Best Overall (Grand Prize) Winner

“Amongst the Stars” by Astrovique

The composition of the work is fantastic, with the constellations surrounding the campers Cyrus and Skadi in an eye catching way. The different textures and layers create a great sense of depth looking up to a starlit sky. The night-time atmosphere is also showcased with a great choice of colours; the cool deep purple contrasting well against the light from the fireplace and the light of the stars. A really beautiful work.

“Stargazing” by Sophie Yang

From Fiona Darwin, Concept Artist and Art Director at Animal Logic:

I relate greatly to Sophie’s piece “Stargazing”. The scene reminds me of some of the wonderful camping trips I had as a young’n. At the end of the day we’d be sitting around the fire either staring into the embers or gazing up to the starry sky waiting for shooting stars. Sophie has represented Cyrus and Skadi very well and used a lovely colour palette to help illustrate the scene. Her use of detail to help draw the eye to the informative areas is great and the beautiful sky combined with the silhouetted trees is lovely. Great work!

Senior Division (16 years and over) Winner

“Great Outdoors” by Annelise Jayne

I love the concept and style of this artwork, it works to tell a story to the viewer. The delicate colours really set the scene, as do the different camping activities and animals showcased. There are also great details, such as Cyrus’ tool belt writing down his observations, which show the amount of thought that was put into expressing the characters in the artwork.

Junior Division (15 years and under) Winner

“Under The Stars” by Molly Ding

This work is very cute, and captures the personalities of both Cyrus and Skadi well - I love the excited expression on Skadi’s face, as well as the detail put into the reflection of the fire on her glasses. The addition of shooting stars in the sky add to a sense of openness and space in the scene. Great job!
